What A Waste!!

With all the stirrings and activities around the predictions of Mr. Harold Camping, I think it is appropriate for Christians to take some time to reflect on what has happened. First, there are countless tens or hundreds of thousands of followers of this man that are either in despair or in denial. Having followed the news coverage I have seen a little bit of both. What a waste it is for this man's organization to have hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and then to squander it on things like billboards. It was reported to the IRS that in 2009 Family Radio had assets of $180 million. Can you imagine how many people could be fed on that kind of money instead of it being wasted on things like advertising the end of the earth? It is amazing to me that this man could have had a radio ministry since 1956, and in all that time could never figure how to comprehend Matthew 24:36, "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."

Frankly, if this man thought that he could scare people into heaven, his return on the investment made for that strategy seems to be pretty poor. It is frustrating to see this fellow having barely brushed off his May 21 prediction failure, when instead of using his head, keeping quiet and letting things settle down, he locked himself into a hotel room and refigured the date, which he says now is October 21. Countless numbers of people have lost everything by placing their trust in this man's hands, and will continue to as history has revealed to us us about other people who have garnered a crowd around their end time cause.

I think there are a couple of things that we as Christians need to be doing. First, we need to be praying for all the people that have been sucked into this movement. We even need to pray for Mr. Camping. The other thing that we need to do is to become an active light in a dark world. Far too often we confine the vast amount of our Christian activities to the four walls of a church building. People would flock to true Christianity if only they saw us living a truly Christlike life. Many of these people are drawn to folks like Mr. Camping because they feel a sense of loss and hopelessness and are counting on the rapture to solve their problems. We need to be able to help these people with integrity and sacrifice so that they can see that no matter what their position in life is that they will be surrounded by caring people who will show them the love of God.

Blessings to You All in the Name of Jesus,

Rev. Timothy Buss
